My name is Ulrich Thümmler. I started teaching myself 3D graphics in 2001, and digital worlds and real-time technology have been my field ever since – today professionally, and still with the same enthusiasm. Ever since I first worked seriously with the Unreal Engine in 2003, the evolution of modern real-time workflows has run through my career like a thread.
My experience covers the production of high-quality 3D environments, characters, gameplay elements, visual effects and shaders. Over the years I have increasingly specialized in the point where art meets technology.
Since 2011, VFX and technical art have been a major part of my work. My focus there is not only on visual quality, but above all on building technical solutions that are performant, flexible and ready for production.
In 2014, photogrammetry was added as another area of focus. Bringing real-world data into digital production has further deepened my understanding of efficient asset pipelines, data processing and automated workflows.
Since 2019 I have concentrated in particular on developing, optimizing and automating pipelines and workflows for real-time production. I build my own tools, scripts and plugins, connect different software solutions and refine existing processes – with the aim of cutting out repetitive steps, reducing sources of error, and letting artists and developers work more efficiently.
My strengths come out where complex technical challenges meet creative requirements. I analyze existing processes, identify bottlenecks and develop pragmatic, scalable solutions that fit sensibly into the production environment already in place.
New technology and difficult problems are not an obstacle to me – they are what drives me. What I enjoy most is working out solutions for tasks that have no established workflow yet.
